axes
Today's post is about axes and how they are used in history and today. Axes were most popular during the medieval times know as a weapon of defense, offense, and also used for public amusement. During the medieval times axes were made from hardened steel or iron. The axes were forged (made from raw steel and heated in the fire till red hot and then beaten into shape) by hand and then tempered again. Tempering is when heating the steel till it is none magnetic then quenching the steel in water, tempering makes the steel harder and less flexible. Tempering also allows the blade to be sharpened and keep its edge for a long time. The most common axe of the medieval times is the Celtic axe this axe only has one side that has a blade but it was still the most common shaped axe. Axes were used as a power weapon to chip or split or chop through things like doors, shields, trees...But some axes like the executioner axe was used for public be-headings, the reason this axe had two blades is because it increased its weight and also during that time their were many be-headings and the axes blades would often get very dull so for this the developed the doubled sided axe so that they wouldn't have to sharpen it as often.
